THE STORY BEHIND THE BRAND

The Berkman is named in honor of Mrs. Daisy Louise Berkman Plummer – philanthropist, champion of the arts, and wife of Mayo Clinic co-founder Dr. Henry Stanley Plummer. Daisy was an extraordinary woman, dedicated to improving the lives of those around her and to strengthening the Rochester community as a whole.

A concert pianist and Red Cross leader, Daisy was a steadfast patron of the arts; stories abound of her creativity, generosity and strong work ethic. She went above and beyond to care for others; she opened her home to all and helped establish Rochester's thriving philanthropic culture, which continues today.

By naming our brand after Daisy, we honor her compassion and kindness, intelligence, and adventurous spirit for which she is known. The Berkman celebrates her legacy and continues to uphold a committment to incredible hospitality and community.

FACTS ABOUT PLUMMER HOUSE

Henry and Daisy Plummer began construction on Plummer House (originally named Quarry Hill) in 1917. Upon its completion in 1924, the 65-acre estate included a five-story house, a water tower, a gazebo and a greenhouse – as well as two caves!

The house was packed with features that were ahead of their time, which is no surprise considering that Henry was famous for being a bit of a “Renaissance man”. From a central vacuum system to an intercom system and the first gas furnace in Rochester, Plummer House was a marvel of modern technology.

After Henry’s death in 1936, Daisy and the couple’s two children continued to live in Plummer House until 1969. Today, the house is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and is managed by Rochester Parks & Recreation (along with 11 of the estate’s original 65 acres).
